Why More NRL Fans Are Taking A Punt, And How To Do It Smartly

Same-game multis, a blockbuster opener in Vegas and a wild Broncos grand final win have sent rugby league betting into overdrive. So why are supporters diving in, what does it mean for the sport and how do you get started without blowing your cash?

Footy talk has always had a sideline, “Who’s getting first try?”, but these days, that chat’s grown into something much bigger. Betting on rugby league isn’t just a laid-back Saturday afternoon thing for the diehards at the pub anymore. Now, it’s popping up on phones with apps such as the Betwayapp, discussed through group chats and woven into how so many fans watch the game.

Why betting has become part of match day

Rugby league is kind of tailor-made for betting. It’s quick, it’s rough and things can turn in a flash. One side might be down by 14 at halftime and still turn it around: Just look at the Broncos’ comeback against the Panthers in those 2025 finals. The numbers back it up, too. PointsBet saw a 23% jump in active punters during the NRL grand final compared to 2023, and a huge part of that was people loving same-game multis. Those bets just make sense to league fans. Instead of just picking which team will win, you can back your own gut-feel about how things will pan out; maybe the fullback sneaks over, and the big boys rumble it up the middle.

And part of it’s just the drama. The Storm were red-hot favourites heading into the 2025 decider, but Brisbane flipped the script and took it 26-22, their first title since 2006. Upsets like that feed the belief that another wild result is always just around the corner.

Vegas is the league’s big-ticket gamble

The NRL isn’t hiding from the betting boom, it’s part of their plan to grow. For the third year running, the comp opened its season in Las Vegas in 2026, pulling nearly 50,000 fans to Allegiant Stadium. Vegas is locked in until at least 2028 as the league goes after a bigger global audience, and a slice of the sports betting pie.

The Knights stunned the Cowboys with a 28-18 win in the opener, and the Bulldogs edged out the Dragons in a tight derby to finish the day. The footy delivered, but the betting windfall hasn’t landed yet. As of 2026, the NRL still hasn’t landed a U.S. betting partnership. But that’s probably smart for now. At home, crowds and TV ratings are huge even without American betting deals, so Vegas is more about the long haul than a fast cash grab.

What the boom means for the sport

Betting runs deep in the NRL these days. 14 of the 17 teams wear betting sponsor logos, with only the Bulldogs, Rabbitohs and Dragons bucking that trend. A lot of clubs rely on that money to balance the books.

That’s why the federal government’s announcement in April 2026 made such a splash. Starting 1 January 2027, ads for betting will be banned during live daytime sports broadcasts; celebrities and athletes can’t do gambling promos; and you won’t see betting brands on stadium signs or player uniforms. Some clubs will have to hunt for new sponsors, and you’ll probably notice a few cleaner, simpler jerseys out there.

How to bet on rugby league

If you’re new to all this, don’t stress. The basics are pretty straightforward. Here are the main markets you’ll see for any NRL game:

Head-to-head: Pick the winning team.

Line (handicap): The favourite gives up a set number of points, the underdog gets a boost.

Total points: Bet if both scores will add up to over or under a certain total.

Tryscorer markets: First try, anytime try, or a player to score multiple tries.

Same-game multi: Combine a bunch of picks from one match into a single bet.

Live betting adds a level of excitement. As play unfolds, the odds shift, so if a favourite stumbles early, you might get better value a few minutes in. It favors fans who actually watch the game, not just check the scores.

Keep it fun

A few solid rules keep betting a fun add-on, not the main event:

  1. Set yourself a budget upfront. This is entertainment spending, not a paycheck.
  2. Never chase your losses. A rough Saturday doesn’t mean Sunday owes you a thing.
  3. Only bet if you’re legal age in your country, and stick with licensed operators.
  4. If it stops being fun, take a break. Ask for help if you need it.
  5. And don’t let your heart do the thinking. Loving your team is great, but the odds don’t care who you support.

Rugby league betting is surging: The game’s unpredictable, multis let you craft your own story and betting’s never more than a tap away. The NRL’s chasing international fans, while tighter ad rules will change how gambling appears at the ground from 2027.
