The Story Of Rugby League In Mount Druitt

When people ask me where I’m from, I tell them Tregear. Tregear is a suburb of Mount Druitt, an area that doesn’t have anything even closely resembling a mountain at all. What it does have though is one of the most multicultural makeups of any area of Australia. That and the Major Druitt pub!

I wanted to put together a list of players that grew up and played some of their football in this area and maybe try and get together some of the history of players and teams in the area.

This section of the web site is one that will change over time and hopefully have a lot of input from readers too.

Whalan Reserve
It is called Whalan Reserve and yet it is very much in Tregear and not so much Whalan. It is a huge area that has a mix of Rugby League, Soccer and Cricket fields, Netball courts and even a Baseball field.

One interesting fact about the history of Whalan Reserve is that it was the side of a former airfield and later was actually part of a motor racing circuit that Jack Brabham once raced at.

Football Clubs
Tregear once had its own football club many years ago called the Tregear Foxes. By the time I was growing up in the area this team didn’t seem to be around any more and by then the team that serviced the Tregear area was the West Mount Druitt Raiders.

A couple more defunct clubs include the Shalvey Bears and Lethbridge Park who “Rocket” Rod Silva played for. There is also the Mount Druitt Dragons who Col Vander Voort played for.

The Western City Tigers remain in the area, formely Hebersham or Hebo.

Now the area is serviced by the financially strong St Marys Rugby League club and to a lesser extent the Minchinbury Jets, with the latters Sunday sides based in the heart of Mt Druitt at town centre reserve.

Rooty Hill RSL is the smallest club in the area. They play at Whalan Reserve. Meanwhile Mt Druitt PCYC run teams out of Peter Van Hassel Reserve at Shalvey.

Possible Mount Druitt Players
Brad Drew
I know his father is from the area but have yet to confirm that Brad Dew is also from Mount Druitt.

Willie Tonga
I’ve been told that for some time, Willie Tonga lived in Mount Druitt in his late teens.
