The Top Players Of Season 2009 – November 2009

Forget all of the stupid awards going around proclaiming this player is the best or that player is the best. Here the record gets set straight. These were the best five players in the world in 2009.

1. Billy Slater
Started the season off in great form and that form stayed with him right the way through the season. The best fullback in the game, retained his State Of Origin and Test jerseys even though he was pushed hard by Jarryd Hayne for the latter.

2. Greg Inglis
Started the season a little slowly with some people suggesting he was carrying a bit too much weigh, but when he found his form he was unstoppable. Was the best player in the State Of Origin series and carried that for right through the NRL Finals series and the Four Nations tournament.

3. Cameron Smith
I was critical of Smith heading into 2009, I felt his attack was not what it once was. Well he turned that around this year playing brilliantly at all levels, from the first game of the season, to the very last. He’ll be the next Australian Test captain.

4. Jarryd Hayne
At the beginning of the 2009 season Jarryd Hayne was playing out of position. While he was doing his best, five-eigth just wasn’t his go, and his form suffered as a result. A move to fullback was the making of him, he eventually settled in and played some outstanding football in the second half of the season, winning his first Dally M Player Of The Year Medal.

5. Benji Marshall
I believe that the most skillful player in the game today is Benji Marshall. In 2009 Marshall played the entire year for the first time in his career. He carried the Tigers in most games he played and some of his season highlights were just believable! The biggest compliment you could give Marshall? In 2009 he made his team mates better.
