Rugby Leagues Top Five Untouchable Records – March 2007

It seems like in the modern day game records are being broken every season. So lets take a look at five records that are likely to never be beaten.

1. St George’s 11 Straight Premierships
It’s a world record for top grade team sports anywhere in the world. Imagine a decade in which one team dominated with players that were not just the best in one year or in an era, but some of the best players of all time all in one team. The Dragons record is made all the more amazing when you look at some of the great teams and brilliant players running around during the same era. In the current era when back to back Premierships are seen as an incredible effort, 11 straight Premierships is completely out of sight.

2. Brian Beaven’s 796 Tries
703 games, 796 tries. That’s more than one try per game. If a player could play for 20 years, they would need to play more than 35 games per year and score at least 40 tries per season. If you were one of those rare players that plays for over 10 years in the NRL and plays 300 first grade games, you would have to score over two and a half tries per game over your career to break this completely unbreakable record.

3. Ken Irvine’s 212 Tries
In just 242 games Ken Irvine amassed an incredible 212 tries in Australia’s premier club competition. The second highest try scorer in Australian Rugby League history is Andrew Ettingshausen with 165 tries in 328 games. Many players have seemingly been on pace to break the record, but the sustained excellence required has seen no one get near such an incredible record.

4. Shaun Edwards 32 Winners Medals
A star of Wigan’s sides of the late 80’s and early 90’s, Edwards was part of an amazing run of success. The Edwards tally of 32 winner’s medals in club competition is likely never to be beaten. With the most winners medal available to English Super League clubs, a player would have to be part of a Grand Final, Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge win every year for ten years to get close to breaking Edwards record.

5. Albert Rosenfeld’s 80 Tries In A Season
During the 1913-1914 season with Huddersfield, Rosenfeld scored an incredible 80 tries over the course of the season!
